Fringe in the media: Put Up and Shut Up!
Northland-based musician and composer Sarah Macombee talked to The Northern Advocate about Put Up and Shut Up!, a boundary-breaking musical with an unexpected theme.
The musical features fellow Northlander Julie Edwards and is based on themes of teenage pregnancy and forced adoption – but the pair promise it is “extremely watchable”.
“Even though there’s a lot of tragedy, and there’s some tragedy in all of our lives, comedy gets you through,” Macombee said.
The performance aims to “shine a light on some rarely talked about dark issues that affect a huge amount of people both in NZ and worldwide”. An unknown number of young New Zealanders had their newborns taken from them and adopted out to married couples during the so-called “baby scoop” era, from the 1950s to 1970s.
